Kimara London is a gifted artist who focuses on portraiture, now lives in Columbia , SC where she has a studio at Columbiana Center Mall near the Food Court.A 2001 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Art, Kimara started drawing at an early age and was encouraged by her mother.
"My mother recognized my artistic ability when I was about four years old, she inspired me by making a face out of the word 'boy' and then I just began drawing faces without the word. In fourth grade I could draw someone and it would actually look like the person."
When I found that I had accumulated sufficient work in my portfolio, I set up my studio and became a freelance artist. "Right now I am developing a series and a style using lots of bright complementary colors," "I am taking what I have learned from studying Renaissance art and combining that with the bright colors. As an artist I enjoy creating contrast in my paintings through use of color and composition. I am fond of the styles and mediums used by artists of former eras such as Rembrandt, Monet, and Gauguin."
"Renaissance art uses contrast, but in general the paintings are very dark. I am using the contrast but with brighter colors."
London’s work has been exhibited in Columbia galleries as well as on the west coast. She also does home shows.
Kimara believes her work has become so successful because of its variety. In addition to portraits, her exhibit at Erskine college, for example, includes portrait, sculpture, collage and landscape. She has traveled to islands such as Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Martin and Nassau, Bahamas and became inspired by beauty of the tropical scenes. Creating art is her gift. She is most grateful for the lasting joy that it brings.
